“No Jab, No Job” Implications For Care Home Staff

What Are The Implication Of ‘No Jab No Job’ For The Care Home Sector In England

On the 11th of November 2021 new laws will prevent anyone from entering a Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered care home unless they have received a full course of vaccinations against Covid-19 or are medically exempt from having the vaccinations. Care home owners will face a fine of up to £50,000 for each individual breach and the rules apply not only to staff but also to cleaners, hairdressers, medical professionals and even CQC inspectors.

According to the new legislation, those who are exempt include friends and relatives of care home residents, members of the emergency services, providers of maintenance services where there is a risk to life or the provision of care and those visiting a resident who is dying.

Close to 14,000 care home residents have died of Covid-19 and Public Health England estimate that a further 35,000 deaths may have been avoided since the vaccination programme began.

Today, the 16th of September is the last date for individuals to have the first of their 2 vaccinations in order to be fully vaccinated by the 11th of November when the new rules come into force. Of the 570,000 people employed in the care home industry in England, the Government estimates that 7% will refuse to be vaccinated. That means that 40,000 care home workers will become unemployable with unimaginable consequences on the provision of care for the elderly.

Peter English, a former chair of the public health medicine committee at the British Medical Association (BMA) is quoted in The Guardian “Care home staff are not being forced to be vaccinated against Covid-19. All that is being said is that they cannot do a particular job unless they are vaccinated.”
